Thailand to play Indonesia in AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 group stage
Thailand to play Indonesia (30 August 2022) – The AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022’s Official Draw, the largest football tournament in South East Asia, came to an end today, outlining the 10 competing teams’ paths to victory.
In Group A, the reigning champions Thailand will play the runners-up of the 2020 competition, Indonesia.
The Finals of the 2020 competition was the last time the two teams squared off. They will be joined in Group A by the Philippines, Cambodia, and the victor of the match between Timor-Leste and Brunei Darussalam in the qualification round.
The games in the qualification round have been set for November 5 and 15.
2018 winners In Group B, Vietnam will compete against 2010 champions Malaysia, four-time champion Singapore, Myanmar, and Laos.
The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) also disclosed that the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 will be played in a full home-and-away format across the 10 ASEAN cities from 20 December 2022 to 16 January 2023, less than four months before the competition begins.
Major General Khiev Sameth, president of the AFF, stated, “We are pleased to have finalized the dates of the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 as well as the official groupings for all the teams. Following today’s draw, ASEAN fans will have enough to look forward to with all the intriguing matchups in the corresponding group matches. The event promises to be exciting and fiercely competitive. The AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 will, in my opinion, exceed all expectations, both on and off the field, and become its best iteration yet.
AFF President Major General Khiev Sameth presided over the proceedings at the Official Draw, which was held at the Shangri-La Bangkok in Thailand. Other attendees included representatives from the various member federations, competing teams, sponsors, and television partners.
Thailand National Football Coach Alexandré Pölking said: “I believe the home and away format for this year’s tournament will be very nice for the fans especially. With two Group Stage games being played at home, it will give a different atmosphere and makes it more special than the previous edition.”
